Join Pixar Animation Studios story supervisor Jason Katz for a behind-the-scenes look at how Pixar creates characters for their films. For over 30 years, Pixar storytellers have been creating some of the most memorable and iconic characters in all of film, from way back to the beginning with Luxo Jr. all the way up to their most recent creations. But what is it about these characters that make them so memorable and believable?

Students will have a chance to find out as Katz shows how he and other artists at Pixar shape and develop characters during the early stages of a production—from the way they look, to their defining personality characteristics, to the way they interact with the world around them. The shape of most Pixar characters literally starts with a simple shape, a circle, an oval, or even a square; Katz will lead the kids in hands-on drawing activities, demonstrating how some of their favorites can be drawn using this starting-off point. Students will then take some of this newly gained knowledge and drawing skills to explore and create some of their own characters.

Jason Katz started working at Pixar Animation Studios back in 1994. He’s worked as a storyboard artist, character designer, and story supervisor on films including: Toy Story (1995), Monsters, Inc. (2001), Finding Nemo (2003), Ratatouille (2007), and Coco (2017). Raised in Southern California, Katz learned to draw from his grandmother. Together, they watched animated television shows and sketched the characters they saw onscreen. Presented in partnership with the Walt Disney Family Museum.
