Description

Stand Up Planet grew out of comic Hasan Minhaj’s recognition of several facts: “The world is full of struggle. Comedy comes from adversity. This must be one hilarious planet.” So, Minhaj embarks on a global journey to meet a new generation of comic rebels changing the world one joke at a time. He visits two of the world’s harshest places—Mumbai, India, and the neighborhoods of Johannesburg, South Africa—connecting with their burgeoning, thriving comedy scenes. Minhaj investigates how humor might function as a critical force, taking on some of our toughest global issues such as racism, sexism, health crises and economic disparities. Minhaj and local favorite Nato Green precede the Festival’s presentation of Stand Up Planet with live, politically minded comedy sets. Minhaj, who’s appeared on MTV’s Failosophy, Arrested Development and Chelsea Lately and has his own YouTube series The Truth with Hasan Minhaj, is the perfect host for Stand Up Planet. He’s a genuinely curious and generous man who wants to be in on jokes the world over. Nato Green, creator of Iron Comic, is currently in the group the Business. His commentaries have appeared in the Huffington Post and San Francisco Bay Guardian. He wrote for Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell and toured with Bell and Janine Brito as Laughter Against the Machine. Stand Up Planet was co-created by David Munro and Xandra Castleton. –Sean Uyehara
