The first part of Alex Gibney and Blair Foster’s deep dive into this ground-breaking publication covers the magazine’s origins and its early growth into cultural and political pacesetter. The story is told mostly through the testimony of contributors, from co-creator Jann Wenner to other notables such as Annie Liebovitz, Greil Marcus, Ben Fong-Torres, and Cameron Crowe, who helped define and cover the major stories of the era. Their words and images are woven throughout while archival footage illuminates the story, bringing the events, ambiance, and performers—from Tina Turner to John Lennon to the Sex Pistols—to rollicking life. Alex Gibney is an Oscar, Emmy, and Grammy Award–winning director and producer of many acclaimed documentaries, including Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (SFFILM Festival 2005), Taxi to the Dark Side (2007), Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson (SFFILM Festival 2008), and Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine (SFFILM Festival 2015). Upcoming projects include a film on television executive Roger Ailes.
Blair Foster is a filmmaker who won two Emmys for her work on the Academy Award–winning film Taxi to the Dark Side (2007), as well as an Emmy for Martin Scorsese’s documentary George Harrison: Living in the Material World. Her most recent films are Sinatra: All or Nothing at All (2015) and the Peabody Award–winning Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown (2014), both directed by Alex Gibney. She is the co-creator and director of The Conversation (2015), a series of short films about race published by the New York Times. Foster attended graduate school for history and has a Masters degree in documentary film from Stanford University.
