Description
Costarring Sergi López (Pan’s Labyrinth) and Julieta‘s Emma Suárez, and gorgeously set in the Spanish Pyrenees, this tense and sexy exploration of identity and small-town suspicions concerns 17-year-old Léo (Àlex Monner, in a rich and beguiling performance), who returns to his village eight years after a fatal accident that took the life of his father. With his mentor Michel (Bruno Todeschini, Son Frère) in tow, Léo, who was known as Gabriel before he reportedly suffered from dissociative amnesia, is warmly received by his long-suffering mother (Suárez, winner of Goya and Gaudí awards for her role) and his best friend and cousin Joan (Igor Szpakowski), but tensions arise when his brutish Uncle Enric (López) begins to suspect the boy isn’t who he claims to be. Award-winning filmmaker Isaki Lacuesta shares directing credit with his frequent screenwriting collaborator Isa Campo for this moody, exceptionally well-acted drama, winner of Best Film and Best Screenplay prizes at the Gaudí Awards, which honor the best in Catalan-language films. –Joe Bowman
A native of Gerona, Spain, Isaki Lacuesta is known for features and shorts in both documentary and fiction form, in addition to video installations. His first documentary feature, Caravan vs. Caravan, was released in 2002, followed by a fiction/documentary hybrid titled The Legend of Time (2006). At the 2011 San Sebastián Film Festival, Lacuesta won the festival’s top honor, the Golden Seashell, for his feature The Double Steps (Festival 2012).
Born in Oviedo, Spain, Isa Campo is probably best known as Isaki Lacuesta’s screenwriting collaborator, but she has worn many hats behind the camera for a number of documentary and fiction films and video installations. She first worked with Lacuesta on Caravan vs. Caravan in 2002. Campo served as a co-writer and collaborator on several of Lacuesta’s other films, including The Double Steps (Festival 2012) and The Condemned (2009).
