Actor Jason Bateman follows up his celebrated directorial debut Bad Words with this off-kilter look at the difficult relations between grown children and their parents, especially when those parents happen to be avant-garde comedy performers. Growing up onstage as the punch lines and convenient fodder in the bizarre public skits of their “situationist” parents (Christopher Walken, Maryann Plunkett), it’s understandable that the now-adult Annie (Nicole Kidman) and Buster (Bateman) have a few issues with their upbringing, and indeed with functioning as adults in general. When their parents suddenly disappear and foul play is suspected, these two slightly damaged yet still loving siblings must figure out what happened, or whether this is actually just their parents’ greatest “skit” yet. Based on Kevin Wilson’s best-selling novel, The Family Fang offers an affecting, humorous examination of family ties, with Bateman and Kidman particularly effective as a brother and sister trying to make sense of a truly bizarre childhood, and an even stranger present day. Composer Carter Burwell follows up his atmospheric work on Carol and Anomolisa with yet another delicate, illuminative score.
Born in New York in 1969, Jason Bateman is best known as an actor from such television series as Arrested Development (2003-13) and Valerie (1986-91), and films such as Identity Thief (2013) and Horrible Bosses (2011). He became the Director Guild of America’s youngest-ever director when he directed three episodes of Valerie, at age 18. In 2013, he made his feature directorial debut with the dark comedy Bad Words.
