Description

Cult director and artist of many distinctions, Alejandro Jodorowsky (El Topo, The Holy Mountain) places his hands on the shoulders of his younger self, looks straight into the camera and says “I am the man you will be, you are the man I was,” and in Endless Poetry, he is not exaggerating. In the second film of a proposed five-part cinematic autobiography, Jodorowsky depicts his life as a young adult in Chile, finding his way as a poet. Son Adan Jodorowsky plays the young Alejandro in this slightly bizarre yet accessible retelling of personal history. Choosing poetry over his studies, young Alejandro frees himself from his strict father and opera singing mother and ventures into Santiago’s colorful nightlife, meeting the writers and artists that will influence his life, including Stella Díaz Varín, Enrique Lihn, and Nicanor Parra. The real Alejandro appears throughout, sage-like, offering himself advice as if his own personal confession, the film itself, is him coming to terms with his past, his choices, and his need to create to live. Endless Poetry has the distinctness of a Jodorowsky film, where seeing is better than telling; as each set is more exaggerated than the last, the obscene is beautiful, and the color palate a vibrant spectacle that makes for a joyful cinematic experience. —Amanda Salazar

Director Alejandro Jodorowsky

Cult filmmaker, surrealist, musician, poet, playwright, and spiritual guru are just a few of the roles of the undefinable Alejandro Jodorowsky. His filmography includes the acid western El Topo (1970) and The Holy Mountain (1973) , and his attempted, ambitious, and aborted film adaptation of Dune is the subject of the documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune (2013). At the age of 88, he continues to create in all art forms, Endless Poetry (2016) being the second part of a five-part cinematic autobiography, the first being The Dance of Reality (2013).
