Bill Nye: Science Guy
Description
The effortlessly charming, bow-tie sporting Bill Nye is beloved by all generations who grew up watching his show, Bill Nye the Science Guy. But his work didn’t stop once the show went off the air. In his current role as CEO of The Planetary Society, Nye is working to advance founder Carl Sagan’s passion project of solar sails. What free time he has he spends debating creationists and climate change deniers. In Bill Nye: Science Guy, we travel along with Nye as he examines ice cores and rapidly retreating glaciers, tours “troubling” biblical theme parks, and visits a convention of science teachers, where he can barely take two steps without a request for a selfie. Filmmakers (and fans) David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg capture candid moments with a man who admits that fame has likely changed him, but who unquestionably strives, on a daily basis, to make the world a better place through science advocacy and education. Science rules! —Laura Henneman
The April 10 screening will include a special Q&A and conversation with subject and Science Guy, Bill Nye; the filmmakers David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg; and Dr. Eugenie C. Scott, the former Executive Director of the National Center for Science Education, an organization that defends the teaching of evolution and climate change in public schools.
David Alvarado received his BA in Radio, Television, and Film from the University of North Texas and his MFA in Documentary Film and Video Production from Stanford University. He is also a 2010 recipient of a San Francisco Film Society Education Grant. With Jason Sussberg, he founded Structure Films, a home for their films about science, health, information, and technology, and made The Immortalists (2014). Alvarado states, “My main interests are science, philosophy, and social problems; I hope to use documentary film to help bridge the gap between these subjects and culture.”
Jason Sussberg has a BA in Film and Digital Media from UC Santa Cruz and an MFA in Documentary Film and Video Production from Stanford University. Before he turned to documentary filmmaking, Sussberg worked in television for the Golden State Warriors and San Francisco Giants.
