Education
The San Francisco Film Society announced today that registration is now open for the 2014 Young Filmmakers Camp (YFC), taking place July 7-August 8. This intensive film program is an opportunity for aspiring filmmakers aged 14-18 to learn from first-class film professionals in a fun, interactive, collaborative environment. The four-week program is divided into two experience-appropriate sessions; students can enroll in the Starter Lab or the Advanced Lab or take both for a full four weeks of total film immersion. Final films will be screened for all students and their family members on the last day of each camp session.
“We can’t wait for summer to meet another group of creative kids-and to welcome back some camp alumni to our Advanced Lab-and give them the tools to produce great films,” said Joanne Parsont, SFFS director of education. “Many of our amazing instructors will also be returning for another year, with several new talents joining the team, so it promises to be another fun year at camp SFFS!”
Starter Lab
July 7-18 (ages 14-18)
This intensive program is for beginning and intermediate filmmakers or any teen looking to enhance their craft and storytelling skills. Over the course of two weeks, students will explore the different elements of the filmmaking process in a series of classes-including screenwriting, cinematography, sound, editing and more-and then collaborate on the production of a short movie.
Advanced Lab
July 28-August 8 (ages 14-18)
For students who feel they have a grasp of the basics, the Advanced Lab is an opportunity to put their skills and creativity to the test. In this two-week production workshop, students will jump right in on day one, writing and planning short group projects to be conceived, shot, edited and screened in the span of the ten-day program. Advanced technical and creative filmmaking techniques will be covered.
Prerequisite: Attendance at previous SFFS Young Filmmakers Camp sessions (including the 2014 Starter Lab). Teens with other filmmaking experience may be eligible; contact SFFS Education at 415-561-5040 or education@sffs.org to discuss eligibility.
Since its launch in the summer of 2010, the SFFS Young Filmmakers Camp has served a total of 99 aspiring young filmmakers and produced more than 25 short films. Films produced at recent YFC sessions can be viewed in the Media Gallery on the FilmEd. website, the Film Society’s comprehensive toolkit and community for filmmakers and educators: filmed.sffs.org.
