During the ensuing decades Matlin struggled for recognition and support as a deaf actor, despite working steadily in both television (The West Wing, Law & Order, The L Word) and film (Sweet Nothing in My Ear, CODA). Her tenacity and dedication to her craft belied the overwhelming challenges Matlin faced personally and professionally. Shoshannah Stern was born in Walnut Creek and raised in Fremont where she attended the California School for the Deaf. She later attended Gallaudet University. Among her acting credits are roles in Threat Matrix, Jericho, Weeds, and This Close, a 2018-2019 drama series she co-created and co-wrote. Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore is her directing debut.
