Description
Veteran Hong Kong martial arts icons Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun-Fat face off against newcomer Ziyi Zhang over a stolen sword in Ang Lee’s electrifying epic. Set in the 19th century, during the last days of the Qing Dynasty, Lee’s breakthrough film is an exhilarating blend of lush visuals, awe-inspiring action, and romantic adventure. A cinematic phenomenon, the film boasts an exquisite cast; Peter Pau’s luminous, Oscar®-winning cinematography; Tom Yip’s costume and Oscar-winning production design; and Yuen Wo Ping’s breathtaking fight choreography with its spectacular, gravity-defying wirework. Nominated for 10 Academy Awards®, including Best Director and Best Picture, it won four, including Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Score for Dun Tan’s vivid compositions.
Twenty-two years after its release, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, screening at the Festival in glorious 35mm, retains its power to thrill.

A native of Taiwan, Ang Lee has forged a singular career in both Asia and the United States. While still a student at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, he served as first assistant director on classmate Spike Lee’s Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads (1993). He made his feature debut Pushing Hands in 1991, followed by Oscar® nominees for Best Foreign Language Film The Wedding Banquet (1993) and Eat Drink Man Woman (1994); Sense and Sensibility (1995), The Ice Storm (1997), and Ride with the Devil (Festival 2010). Lee’s next film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) was an international sensation, capturing numerous awards and nominations, including 10 Oscar nods, winning Best Foreign Language Film and garnering Lee’s first Best Director nomination. He went on to win the award twice, for Brokeback Mountain (2006) and The Life of Pi (2012). Among his other films are Hulk (2003), Lust, Caution (2007), Taking Woodstock (2009), Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk (2016), and Gemini Man (2019).
