Description
Presented at the Festival since its inaugural year in 1957, the Golden Gate Award Doc Competition features the most significant non-narrative films of the season. Join us for an encore presentation of the GGA McBaine Documentary Feature Award Winner.
With brush in hand, George Anthony Morton applies classical painting techniques learned during a decade spent in a federal prison, his unique artistry blooming on canvas. Recently returned to his hometown, Kansas City, Morton struggles with his complex relationship with his mother while serving as a mentor to his young nephew. At the same time, he strives to overcome the inequalities of the predominantly white art world and the stigma of his former incarceration. With support from producer Roger Ross Williams (Life, Animated, Festival 2016), first-time filmmaker Rosa Ruth Boesten provides an intimate, softly lit portrait of the artist that tells a nuanced story about the love of art, readjusting to normal life after imprisonment, and working toward generational healing.
Dutch filmmaker Rosa Ruth Boesten is a documentary filmmaker who has made artists her subject, beginning when she was 17 and made a film about her textile artist grandmother. Master of Light (2022), her first feature, won the Documentary Feature Grand Jury Award at the SXSW Film Festival.
