The 54th San Francisco International Film Festival (April 21-May 5) announces that Another Earth, Magic Trip and Submarine have been added to the Festival schedule.
Mike Cahill’s auspicious debut feature, Another Earth, begins on the night of the appearance of a duplicate Earth in the solar system, when a promising young MIT astrophysics student and an accomplished classical-music composer cross paths in a tragic accident. This accomplished near-future sci-fi drama marks an impressive collaboration between willowy actress Britt Marling and resourceful director Mike Cahill, who together have created a haunting story of loss and redemption. Another Earth plays 9:00 pm, Sunday, May 1 at Sundance Kabuki Cinemas. The film is distributed by Fox Searchlight.
Alison Ellwood and Alex Gibney’s new documentary, Magic Trip, features rare footage of Ken Kesey, Allen Ginsberg and Neal Cassady, and is narrated by Stanley Tucci. Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters’ infamous cross-country trip from California to Tomorrowland at the New York World’s Fair was documented in 16mm film, audio recordings and photographs. These rich sources were recently unearthed and in this transporting documentary breathe new life into a special moment in American history and the counterculture. Magic Trip plays 9:00 pm, Saturday, April 23 at Sundance Kabuki Cinemas. Magnolia Pictures will open the film in theaters this summer.
Oliver, an incredibly astute, keenly observational and wildly imaginative 15-year old is the main character in Richard Ayoade’s new comedy, Submarine, starring Craig Roberts, Paddy Considine, Noah Taylor, Sally Hawkins and Yasmin Paige. Oliver thinks he has it all figured out, but his inklings lead him down paths strange, charmed and heartbreaking in this offbeat comedy that shrewdly adapts Joe Dunthorne’s dryly humorous novel about adolescent growing pains. Submarine plays 9:30 pm, Wednesday, May 4 at Sundance Kabuki Cinemas. The Weinstein Company will open the film in theaters June 3.
