In 2018, the scientific community began to reckon with its own history of harassment and abuse. The US National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine produced a study that concludes that 50% of female scientists suffer some form of sexual harassment at work or in school. In response to that study, the members of several prestigious institutions have demanded consequences, investigating charges and, in some cases, stripping scientists of previously awarded honors and funding.
